Parental Involvement Institute

Target Audience:
Administrators, Teachers, Counselors, Community Leaders, Parent Advocates and School Board Members

Purpose:
The Parental Involvement Institute is a four day training course designed to increase the diversity competencies of participants to effectively engage parents from poor, urban areas in the academic success of their children.

Expected Outcomes: Each participant will -

  1. increase their understanding about why urban parents resist involvement and why educators resist involving parents
  2. analyze the hidden assumptions that frustrate effective involvement
  3. leverage diversity strategies in targeting barriers to effective involvement
  4. learn how to make the mission case for parental involvement
  5. add value to their competencies for effectively working with parents across comfort zones through the enhancement of multicultural communication skills
  6. develop a presentation to secure parental involvement in the academic success of their children
  7. sharpen their workshop presentation skills

Location:
Our team of instructors will conduct the training at your site or at a venue of your choosing.

Number of Participants:
The ideal size group is 15 to 25.

CPUs or PDUs can be provided in accordance with district policy. Participants will receive certificates for completing the Institute.

The faculty team for the Institute will be led by Dr. Samuel Betances, Dr. Sonya Whitaker, and Dr. Rosita Lopez. They are all parents and educators. All three are seasoned proponents of educational reforms for increasing the achievement and graduation rates of students from poverty areas in urban settings. They are products of public education and each has a splendid record as a workshop presenter and motivator. The team has great credibility in making the mission case for engaging parents as partners in the quest to educate their children. Their experience collectively reflects years in the profession as teachers in the K-12 system, administrators, and as very successful diversity consultants to various school systems, agencies, business organizations, labor unions, faith based organizations, and community groups throughout the country and overseas.
